Environmental Art

I see the universe, a beautiful galaxy cloud in space, yet also a view through a microscope. I love the perspective shift my imagination takes when viewing these amazing creations.

Toxic Art‬ is a short documentary about artist John Sabraw's latest series of paintings and collaborations with Ohio University researchers and engineers. Through different processes, acid mine drainage is transformed into the ‪‎pigment‬ used to create the large scale, ‪‎environmentally conscious‬ paintings. I was glad I managed to get to see his work at CC's I.D.E.A. Space - on the last day, March 5th. I must admit, I wish he'd been my painting prof when I was studying art at OU!

Artist: John Sabraw

We finally had a chance to see John Sabraw's beautiful work at the Idea Space, Colorado College (on the last day - March 5th). It is truly exquisite, representing the micro to the macro. I could see petri dishes, views through a microscope, a snapshot of these broken Appalachian streams, all the way out to the galaxy and views of cosmic clouds. Here is a great article in the Independent about the whole exhibition, and a video about John's process

I can't help but wonder what my experience at Ohio University would have been like had he been my teacher, since I also create poured paintings, and care deeply about the environment.

My Trip to Ohio: Part 4

Our last day in Ohio -- we said goodbye to L&G and Lucy. (Many thanks for the red raspberries, the espresso, the delicious homemade granola and bread, and your generous hospitality.)

Lucy

We quickly drove west and then south to Portsmouth where we walked around town desperate to find a good cup o' joe. We regretted not stopping on our way out of town at the Village Bakery one more time for a great scone and coffee... From Portsmouth we took highway 52 and then down to Lexington, KY before heading back to Nashville, TN.

so many beautiful old buildings ...

as we drove to Tennessee, we spotted a castle in Kentucky -- apparently you can stay the night or have your wedding there, etc...

one more stop before we get back, a walk around 'historic' Bloomfield, KY
